I am from Scotland and, growing up, I was very much aware of a 'them and us' mentality in the Glasgow of my childhood, (lightly less so today as religion withers on the vine). Catholics were the Palestinians of Scotland. Before I joined the police, Catholics were not able to join the police force, that has now changed. Catholics tended to live in virtual ghettos and be treated as second class citizens, nothing like as bad as the Palestinians or black Americans or even Northern Ireland but still, bigotry and segregation were a way of life. To this day, the vast majority of Catholic and Protestant schoolchildren in Scotland are schooled separately, it's a disgusting, divisive system and it costs a great deal, not only financially but in heart break and human suffering. On a different note. I see that you prefer not to read novels but If I might be so bold as to recommend my favourite novels by a famous writer, I would wish that you might become a fan. The books are the Aubrey Maturin novels by Patrick O'Brien: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aubrey%E2%80%93Maturin_series
at Amazon: http://tinyurl.com/cmz2e5u
All the best,
CallumAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
